What is Dog Dancing?
Dog dancing, officially known as canine freestyle, is a high-level dog obedience sport performed to music. It's essentially a choreographed routine where the dog and its handler perform a dance or tell a story to the rhythm and mood of the music. This isn't just a series of tricks; it's a carefully composed, precise, and expressive performance that celebrates the extraordinary harmony between a dog and its owner.
Dog dancing has two main categories, each with different emphases:
1. Freestyle
The Freestyle category offers the greatest creative freedom. There are no prescribed positions or movements; the pair can incorporate almost any trick or movement into their choreography to match the music's mood and rhythm. This includes spectacular elements like weaving, jumps, rolls, leaps, precise turns, or even walking on two legs. The emphasis is on flow, variety of movements, and absolute synchronicity between the dog and handler, allowing the pair's unique style to fully flourish.
2. HTM (Heelwork to Music)
HTM, or Heelwork to Music, is the more structured category of dog dancing. Here, a significant portion of the choreography (typically 75%) consists of specified, synchronized heeling positions. The dog must move on various sides and in different positions relative to its handler, always maintaining a close, precise connection. These positions can include the dog on the handler's right or left side, in front, behind, or even between their legs, all in continuous motion. The goal is to demonstrate precise, smooth transitions and harmonious, rhythmic movement to the beat of the music. The remaining portion can be supplemented with freely chosen tricks, but the focus remains on the accuracy and fluidity of the heeling.
